Music That Works on
a Mixed Crowd

The awkward thing about a party is who's actually in the room. At a 21st it's a flat full of mates and both sets of parents. At a 50th it's old school friends, workmates and someone's teenagers. A playlist picks a side and half the room sits down.

That's the part we've been doing in Southland since 1975 — watching what's working and changing what isn't. If the floor is packed we keep going; if it's thinning out we shift gear. It's the whole reason a live band beats a speaker in the corner for this kind of night.

What we bring

  • PA, sound system and stage lighting — which matters most at a hall or a shed, where there's usually nothing there at all.
  • Four sets, around four hours — with a playlist covering the breaks so the room never goes quiet.
  • A song list spanning several decades — the reason a mixed-age room stays on the floor.
  • Volume that suits the room — background while people arrive and eat, up for the dancing.
  • A full or compact setup — sized to whatever space you've got, from a hall stage to a lounge.

21sts

The classic mixed room — the twenty-somethings want it loud and late, and the parents want to hear the speeches and recognise a few songs. We can do both, in that order.

Milestone birthdays

40ths, 50ths, 60ths and up. Usually the crowd we're most at home with, because the music they grew up on is the music we've been playing for decades.

Anniversaries and engagements

Quieter through the meal and the speeches, then a proper dance afterwards. If there's a particular song that matters to the couple, give us notice and we'll sort it.

Reunions, farewells and club nights

Leaving dos, big-birthday surprises, club functions and get-togethers where the whole point is that people stay longer than they meant to.

Questions We Get Asked

It's at a hall with nothing in it — is that a problem?

No, that's most of what we do. We bring the PA, the lighting and everything else. All we need is power and somewhere to set up.

How much space do you need?

The full band wants a stage or a decent corner for a drum kit and PA. The Night Cru acoustic setup fits into a lot less. Send us a photo of the room and we'll tell you which one works.

Can we hear what you play first?

Our YouTube channel has live footage from real gigs, which gives you a much better idea than a list would. There are some crowd favourites on the home page too.

Can we request particular songs?

Ask us. We play hundreds of songs, so there's a good chance it's already in there. If it's something specific and important, give us plenty of notice and we'll see what we can do.

How long do you play for?

Usually four sets over about four hours, with a playlist covering the breaks. If you want us starting later or finishing earlier, just say so when you book.

Do you travel out of Invercargill?

Yes — we play right across Southland and have done for decades. Tell us where it is and we'll let you know.
